TYRO CUP QUARTER FINAL - JAN 29TH 2012

SALISBURY CITY 1 V 2 HEDGE END RANGERS
Well done to Hedge End for becoming the first team to beat us this season. We were aware beforehand that Hedge End could pose a threat to us if we let them. Therefor, for most of the match our players gave them little. In the first half it was one way traffic for Salisbury, Hedge End did work to get themselves into the game but to little avail, we kept pressing forward and got our reward when Tom Farwell put in a great cross for Billy, who outjumped his opponent to head into the top cornerand put us 1-0 up. At this point it looked like Salisbury were firmly in the driving seat. Fair play to Hedge End, they didn't let their heads drop and came out for the second half determined to get back into the game and began to win a bit more of the ball in the middle of the park and press forward themselves but overall the Salisbury players soaked up any breaks and went on the attack . The game turned with about 12 minutes to go when Hedge End got themselves a well worked equaliser which gave their boys a boost and deflated a few of our players, who, until then, hadn't given much away. Within a few minutes Hedge End were in front after once again exploiting a gap in our defence. To our credit with only a few minutes left to play we kept pushing for an equaliser but Hedge End fought hard to hold onto their lead. All in all a good cup tie to watch. Good luck to Hedge End in the semi final. Both sets of players deserve praise for the way the game was played,
with lots of effort and determination being shown and even when it looked like it was going to be Salisbury's day, Hedge End never gave up
and seized their chance when it came.

Hants FA Cup Quarter Final - Jan 15th 2012
Christchurch 1 v 3 Salisbury CIty

When the quarter final draw was made and it gave us an away trip to Christchurch, we knew that this would not be an easy match. We'd met Christchurch once before (almost 2 years ago) in the Hants Cup Final and had won 4-0 but we knew that they had strengthened their squad since then and were a more competitive side. And so it prooved. In the first 5 minutes of this match both teams went close, Salisbury had a chance which was quickly followed by Christchurch putting the ball just past the post. The game then settled down and saw Salisbury having a lot of possesion and pushing forward without creating too many clear cut chances. Christchurch worked hard to make it difficult for us to get into dangerous areas and on occasion went on the attack themselves. Salisbury finally made a break through, in the first half, when Aiden took the ball and headed in on their goal. As their keeper committed himself and came out of his goal, Aiden calmly lobbed him to make it 1-0 at half time.
This was a scoreline that not too many watching, would have argued with.
In the second half, Christchurch started the more positive and for the first part of this half, they had our boys pinned back with a lot of defending to do. They started to win themselves a few corners and create a few half chances before they got themselves a deserved equaliser.
Christchurch, now knew they were in with a chance of turning this game around and it's to the credit of our Salisbury boys that they stuck to their task and worked hard in defence and midfield to get us back into the game and continue to break away and put Christchurch on the back foot. With about 15 minutes left to play, we were awarded a penalty, which was contested loudly by a couple of the Christchurch players but Bradlee our Captain, kept his cool and calmly put the ball in the back of their net to put us 2-1 up and give us a bit of breathing space. Christchurch tried to press for an equaliser but this was leaving them open in defence, which our boys started to exploit. We came close to going 3-1 up when Sam headed against their crossbar and then we did get ourselves another goal when Nick broke away and tried to pass the ball past their keeper only to see the ball hit the post and come out but he was quick to react and made sure we went 3-1 up by tapping in the rebound. Overall, this was hard fought cup match between 2 teams determined to go through to the semi final and though there wasn't a lot of fluent passing football, due to the occasion, it was exciting to watch. Yes, we did get a penalty given in our favour but as they say "goals win games" and at the end of it all,
we got 3 and they only got the 1. Well done Salisbury City, once again you have proven that you are a hard team to beat.
Thanks to Christchurch for the after match sausage and chips. Appreciated.

We now face Wimborne Town in the semi final, to be played at Sherfield English on 12th Feb.

11TH DECEMBER 2011 - HANTS CUP LAST 16
SALISBURY CITY 7 V 0 POMPEY PIRATES
Todays result was a convincing, all round team performance. The boys carried out the managers instructions to the letter and if the Pompey Pirates came to our Sherfield English ground hoping to get a result out of this game, their hopes were quickly dashed as our boys were on the front foot from the off, with a lot of nicely worked link up play, and for most of the match, this is how it stayed. Our keeper, Tom , had very little to do, such was our dominance and on the odd occasion the Pirates threatened to push forward, our midfield were back to help out and our defence were quick to regain the ball and get us moving forward again. Our forwards were a threat throughout. Nick scored a well deserved hatrick, Sam Bailey got two (one of them a powerful shot from outside the box) and Aiden and Billy also got themselves on the scoresheet.
Final Score 7-0 (it could have been more but for the post, the crossbar and a few near misses, keeping the score down)
Scorers for Salisbury: Nick Menning 3, Sam Bailey 2, Billy Ward, Aiden Compton

Half Term Goal Report: Since the beginning of the season, we've scored 80 goals in 14 games (league, hants cup, tyro cup).
After losing our main goal scorer of last season, Richie, to Pompey Academy, there was some concern that we wouldn't be the same threat in front of goal that we had been. Our Manager, however, never had any doubts and was always confident the boys would score plenty and any concerns there were, should have been dispelled by now, as our other top scorers of last season (Nick, Sam B, Billy, Bradlee, Tom F) have already equalled or surpassed their totals for the whole of last season (and we're only at the halfway point of THIS season) and we've added another goal scorer to the squad by signing Aiden on at the start of the season. So, well done to ALL of the SCFC TYRO SQUAD - Keep it up boys, we're only half way there.
Your Xmas present from the Manager is a tough January fixture list to look forward to.

TRAINING AS USUAL FRIDAY 16TH DECEMBER - ASTRO PITCHES - WILTON ROAD - 6pm - 7.30pm

01ST DECEMBER 2011
MID SEASON MESSAGE FOR THE BOYS - FROM THE MANAGER
Well done this weekend boys - another win and another game out of the way.
You're now more than half way through the season and are still unbeaten, as well as still being involved in cup competitions.
Just remember though - THIS IS NOT THE TIME FOR COMPLACENCY!
We have won nothing yet and to give yourself a chance of winning anything this season, continue to work hard in training and in every match.
I want to see you playing as a team, boys! I'm not interested in who scores the most goals. An unselfish assist that leads to a goal is just as important to the team. I want to see you work hard for each other and be prepared to go that extra yard to help each other out.
I want to see you play with passion and enjoy your football.
Yes, we are at the top at the moment but our opponents will be looking to knock us off our perch.
Which is why we need to be FOCUSSED, DETERMINED and MOTIVATED.
It's down to YOU BOYS, how far we go BUT we need to:

improve our communication on the pitch
work harder, all around the team, when defending
concentrate and keep our shape throughout a match
improve our movement off the ball
move the ball quicker around the pitch
become more effective in front of goal

As a squad, it's time to move up a gear or two and see where it get's us, come the end of the season.
I know you are more than capable of winning something. Just believe in yourselves, as individuals and as a team.
If we all stay united and positive and keep working hard (and that includes the coaching staff, assistants and parents), we'll do well.
Are you up for the challenge? I hope so, because i am! Come on! - Yours, The Manager

27TH NOVEMBER - TYRO DIVISION ONE
COLDEN COMMON RANGERS 1 V 3 SALISBURY CITY
On a sloping pitch, and under windy conditions, Colden Common worked hard to make this match a bit more difficult for Salisbury than when we met earlier on in the season. Our boys were far from their best today but the 1-3 scoreline could have been a bit higher, if only we'd been a bit more determined in front of goal. Highlight of the match for us, was our second goal which saw us play some nice passing football from our own half, into Colden Commons penalty area where some neat interplay, put the ball into Sam Baileys path, who found the back of the net with a powerful shot.
Scorers for Salisbury: Sam Bailey 2, Nick Menning

20th NOVEMBER - TYRO CHALLENGE CUP ROUND 2
WINCHESTER YOUTH (A) BLACK 2 V 3 SALISBURY CITY
This was a match that was not as even as the scoreline might suggest. In the first half, Salisbury set up camp in Winchester's half and it seemed it was only a matter of time before we scored as we continued to attack their goal. Then, out of the blue, Winchester went in front. One of their boys booted the ball upfield, to give themselves some breathing space and the ball bounced towards our goal. An attempted clearence was missed, leaving Winchester to put the ball in the net and go 1-0 up. As they say, "football's a funny old game". From the restart, Salisbury were on the front foot again and this time their attacking play was rewarded, when a nice passing move ended up with the ball being put into the area for Nick to
cooly put away. A similar attack, not much later, found Tom Farwell at their backpost to put another cross, under their keeper and into the net.
The score was 1-2 at half time. In the second half, Winchester came out and played with more determination but it wasn't long before Salisbury took control of the game and were looking to score again. As in the first half, it just seemed a matter of time but on a rare Winchester attack, they got an equaliser when our keeper, slid out to make a save but one of their players was onhand to win the ball and make the game 2-2. Salisbury then went after the winner and came close on a few occassions . A couple of saves and the Winchester crossbar denied us before Aiden got inside the box to put us ahead, with what turned out to be the winning goal. Near full time Winchester did have a chance to equalise but a well timed tackle from Ben Bradwell put the ball out of harms way. Final score 2-3. Salisbury are now through to the quarter finals of the Tyro cup.
Scorers for Salisbury: Nick Menning, Tom Farwell, Aiden Compton

13th NOVEMBER - HANTS CUP 3RD ROUND
PETERSFIELD TOWN 0 V 1 SALISBURY CITY
This away fixture was a long way to go to come away from it without the right result, so, well done on your win boys.
Petersfield Town, being the home team, were well up for this match and their manager said afterwards that it was the best his team had played and that we were one of the best teams they'd faced. In football we like to see nice, passing, effective play but sometimes this isn't possible due to the opposition playing out of their skin and competing for every ball 100%. At times like these, it's time to roll up your sleeves and today, because you had to, you prooved, that when "pretty football" goes out the window and it comes to a hard physical battle you are also capable of handling yourselves and to keep on going till the end. Our goal, (after having one disallowed) eventually came in the second half. Nick picked the ball up halfway in their half and made a run that got him behind the Petersfield defence to put the ball into the six yard box and into the path of Billy, who although knocked off balance by Aiden , managed to connect with the ball and send it spinning over the line. The breakthrough had been made. Overall, Petersfield didn't trouble our goal too much apart from a period towards the end of the match when they pressed for an equaliser
but they never stopped competing and made it difficult for us to break them down.
The score could have been more but for a disallowed goal and a brilliant save from their keeper.
Towards the end of the match, our keeper, Tom Roberts, made a great save, diving low to his right, to keet Petersfield out and us on the way
to the 4th round and a home fixture against Pompey Pirates. Final score - a hard won 0-1 to us
Scorer for Salisbury: Billy Ward

06th NOVEMBER 2011 - TYRO DIVISION ONE
SALISBURY CITY 3 V 1 ST FRANCIS RANGERS
Not a great deal to report on this game. After the way we played against Hedge End last week, this was a bit like "after the lord mayors show" . Yes, we won the game today and collected the 3 points to put us even further ahead of Pace Pumas (who only drew against Winchester) but it was, for us, to use another cliche, a bad day at the office. Our passing was a long way off the standard we've come to expect and our finishing, overall, left a lot to be desired. Throughout the game, to our credit, we kept pressing forward and trying to create chances but it was all a bit scrappy.
This isn't to take anything away from St Francis, though. They came to us today and battled and tackled, showed a lot of committment and created themselves a few chances and even got themselves a goal towards the latter stages of the match but by then our boys had done enough with 3 goals to put the game beyond them and on another day, the score could have been a few more to us, if only we'd have put our finishing boots on.
Scorers for Salisbury: Nick Menning, Bradlee Walton (pen), Aiden Compton (pen)

03RD NOVEMBER 2011
If you checked out todays Salisbury Journal for a report on last sundays match, you might have been dissapointed it wasn''t in there. So were we. We sent our report in as usual but it wasn't used. They usually cut our reports down to the basics so we don't send too much anymore
but below is what we sent, we'll see if it can be mentioned next week:

Monday, October 31, 2011 12:02pm : Report to Journal - Subject Youth Football
Tyro Division One - U13's - Hedge End Rangers 0 v 3 Salisbury City
Salisbury City Tyro U13's unbeaten run in this seasons campaign, continued, with a comprehensive 3-0 win over near rivals Hedge End. All the goals were scored in the first half, with the Salisbury boys playing a style of attacking football that had those in attendance watching on in admiration.
On another day the score could have been much higher but the Hedge End goalie came to the rescue on numerous occasions.
The win leaves the City boys 6 points clear at the top. Scorers: Nick Menning, Bradlee Walton, Tom Farwell

(As for the bit in the journal about the development 3 days of coaching. We did not send this in, the development centre must have sent it in themselves.
Anyway, the first two days were "fun days" and the bit about the "third day" should have read, "outstanding player of the Elite Coaching Day")

23RD OCT - 2011 - TYRO DIVISION ONE
HEDGE END RANGERS 0 V 3 SALISBURY CITY
Our first half display today was all about positive attacking play with plenty of passing and moving the ball around at speed. Our attitude and determination, all around the pitch, from the start of the game, saw Hedge End on the back foot and for most of the first half this is how it remained. Each time Hedge End did threaten to break out, our midfield and defence did a good job of containing them and getting the ball moving forward again. The real damage, today, was done in the first period of the game with our boys scoring 3 goals. The first came very early in the game when Billy received the ball on the left wing and a determined run got him behind the Hedge End Defence to put in a cross to the back post that saw Nick Menning in just the right position to put the ball in the back of the net. Shortly afterwards Salisbury got themselves a corner, this was also delivered to the far post and Bradlee was on hand to head the ball home. If that wasn't good enough within the first 20 minutes it was 3-0 to Salisbury after another passing move finished with Sam (Bailey) firing in a shot that was pushed towards the far post by their keeper and into the feet of Tom Farwell, who was following in and put the ball into the net. Before half time the score could have been more but for a missed penalty and some close calls. The second half was a more evenly contested affair with the ball shifting a bit more, from one end to the other but by this time, it looked like the game was already won and with the drizzle that had fallen throughout the match, continueing to fall and the ball skimming about and making passing a bit more difficult and the boys tiring a little, the game turned into a scrappy affair and not too many clear cut chances were created.
When the ball did get through to our keeper, Tom Roberts, it was dealt with confidently and quickly put back in to play. Final score 3-0 to Salisbury.

After the match, the Hedge End Manager sportingly asked us to congratulate our boys on a deserved win and to tell them, that their play
(especially in the first half) had been a pleasure to watch. Thanks a lot Steve, i'm sure the boys will appreciate your comments.
Scorers for Salisbury: Nick Menning, Bradlee Walton, Tom Farwell

If you want another report on this match, the Eastleigh Juniors manager (his team didn't have a game today), was spotted on the side line, observing our game. Anyway it seems, with time on his hands because he had no match, he's done a spot of reporting (thanks for that)
and his account of the game can be found at

16TH OCT - 2011 - TYRO DIVISION ONE
EASTLEIGH JNRS 0 V 3 SALISBURY CITY
One thing our team do not do is take other teams lightly and today we weren't about to start because Eastleigh have done well since their promotion and we knew, having watched them play Pace, that they would be no push over and so it prooved. In the first half it was quite an even contest as each team battled for possesion and the game shifted from one end to the other at quite a frenetic pace (apart from numerous stoppages from the head tyro ref, who took time out at each stoppage to tell the boys why he'd stopped the game) On chances created, our boys shaded the first half but the Eastleigh defence were strong and gave little away. 0-0 at half time. After a half time rollicking, our boys, who'd been a bit indifferent in the first half and not playing to their usual standard, came to life. Our boys started the second half with more determination and the half time substitution made by our manager paid dividends early on when Charlie Rogers, only just on, collected the ball and cooly put it in the back of Eastleighs net. The deadlock had been broken and our boys stepped up a gear. Eastleigh continued to play their part and fought to get back into the game but shortly after Sam Bailey collected the ball outside the penalty area and struck it goalwards, it looked like it was going over but it dipped in under the bar. 2-0 to our boys! it was now a long way back for Eastleigh as we pushed for a third goal, which came from a nice passing move which saw us pick the the ball up in our own half and playing it up to one of our forwards who neatly put the ball into the path of Charlie Rogers who tapped the ball past their keeper and over the line into the side of their net. 3-0 to Salisbury and no way back for Eastleigh. Towards the end of the match and with Eastleigh looking to get a consolation goal, from where i was standing it looked like they should have had a penalty, when one of their boys was brought down in the area but the ref who had been stopping the game throughout, for lots of minor infringements, waved play on. Final score 0 - 3 to Salisbury City. Like last season, when Hedge End came up from Div 2 and made our league stronger and more interesting,
it looks like Eastleigh have done the same this season and there could be some interesting results before this season is over.
To sum up, our boys were not at their best today but our defence stood strong and we worked hard all around the pitch to
overcome a determined opposition and collect 3 well earned points.
Scorers for Salisbury: Charlie Rogers 2, Sam Bailey

09TH OCT 2011 - HANTS CUP 2ND ROUND
WINCHESTER YOUTH BLUES 1 V 15 SALISBURY CITY
When Winchester Blues (tyro div 3) were drawn against us for this 2nd round cup fixture, they may have thought they were in for a long 70 minutes and so it was. Credit to Winchester Blues, though, throughout the match they continued to try and play their game without letting their heads drop but today our boys were too strong for them and for long periods of the match they outplayed the Winchester Blues. It took our boys a while to find their feet and more importantly the oppositions net but once they did it was one way traffic. 0-7 at half time became 1-15 at full time. Perseverence from Winchester got them a consolation goal halfway through the 2nd half. Two hatricks for us today came from Aiden Compton and Charlie Rogers who netted 4 times. Thanks to Winchester for some after match grub and good luck with the rest of your season.
Scorers for Salisbury: Nick Menning 2, Aiden Compton 3, Charlie Rogers 4, Bradlee Walton 2, Sam Bailey, Charlie Burden, Billy Ward

02nd October 2011 - Tyro Div One - Salisbury City 3 v 1 Winchester Youth
This was Winchester's first league game of the season so we didn't realy know what to expect from them. We knew they had won a few six a side competitions during the summer and that they had signed some new boys and were most probably feeling a bit confident starting their league campaign. From the kick off, Winchester were determined to stop us getting an early hold of the game and worked hard to stop us creating too much up front. For a lot of the first half the game was played in midfield as we continued to push forward and test their defence. Eventually Sam Bailey put a great through pass into the path of Billy who put the ball across the keeper and into the net to make it 1-0.
From the restart the midfield battle continued and any time Winchester made any inroads into the last third of the pitch, our defence did a good job of shutting them down and get us moving forward again. Towards the latter part of the first half Winchester at last managed to get behind our defence and put the ball across our keeper and into the net. Until then Winchester had troubled us little but had now given themselves hope.
Half time score 1-1. Both sets of boys had worked hard in the first half, on what was a very hot day and it showed as the start of the second half was a bit of a scrappy affair as each team tried to gain the upper hand but as in the first half, it was our Salisbury boys applying most of the pressure. After some shots, on our part, that were hit more in hope, than anything else, Tom Farwell saw his chance and powered the ball into the net to put us 2-1 up and give us a bit of well needed breathing space. We then went close again when the crossbar was hit from a free kick. When Winchester did get forward our defence was once again up to the task and when they eventually got a shot on target, Tom Roberts our keeper got down quickly top make a good save. Further pressure from Salisbury led to a penalty when Billy was brought down as he closed in on their goal.
Up stepped Bradlee to calmly put the ball high into the net and out of reach of the Winchester keeper.
Final score 3-1 to Salisbury and another 3 points to keep us top of Tyro Div One.
Next up is a Hants Cup 2nd round match against Winchester Youth Blue, the Winchester B team.
Scorers for Salisbury: Billy Ward, Tom Farwell, Bradlee Walton

25th September 2011 - Tyro Div One - Pace Pumas 0 v 4 Salisbury City
After we won the League, League cup and Hampshire cup and never lost a game, in the feelgood season of 09/10, one team came out with a hunger to win in season 10/11 and that team knocked us out of 2 cup competitions on penalties, took away our unbeaten league record and went on to win the League, League cup and Hampshire cup, themselves. That team are Pace pumas and as the cup and league champs they are a team that we'd need to get back on winning terms against, if we want a chance of lifting any silverware this season. Todays match, therefor was a chance to see if our well planned, busy pre season would yield any results against a team we see as one of our main opponents. Our boys turned up for this game with a positive attitude and looked energetic and focussed during the pre match warm up, much to the managers approval. From the kick off it was clear our boys were up for this one as they worked hard in all areas of the pitch and made it hard for Pace to get a foothold in the game. Up front Nick and Aiden were causing the Pace defence a lot of problems and when our attacks broke down they became the first line of defence backed up by our busy midfield. In the first half our boys were more often than not on the front foot and on the few occasions Pace did break through our midfield, our defence stuck to their task and kept their shape to make it difficult for Pace to get a sight of goal. Continued pressure on our part finally paid off when Nick picked up the ball and ran with it before putting a long range effort high over the keeper and into Pace's net. A short while later and not to be outdone Aiden fired home a long range effort that gave the keeper no chance. Nick Menning then became provider for Salisbury's thrird goal as he cut down the side of the Pace defence before putting a great ball into the 6 yard box for Aiden to make it 0-3 to Salisbury. It's not very often you'll see our manager jump and dance about but jump and dance he did as this third goal was put away. Our fourth goal of the first half was a scrappy affair, Tom Farwell hit the ball goalwards, the ball hit the post before bouncing up and being bundled over the line by Billy's shoulder after he had followed in on Toms rebound. With the goalie being there plus defender and a couple of Salisbury boys, it was a bit of a scramble but the Pace line official had spotted the ball had gone over the line and signalled a goal. The ref thought the signal was for an infingement but the line official corrected him and the goal was given. Score at half time was 0-4. In the second half, Pace got themselves more into the game and it became a more even match and one we are more used to seeing between these two teams. Once again though, the Salisbury defence stayed strong and gave little away and the midfield continued to battle for the ball and look to put our forwards through on goal. No more goals in this half though, the damage had been done in the first half but it was good to see our boys continue to work for each other from the start to finish of this match. Manager and parents were well pleased and so should you be, boys. Well done to you all. This was a great result and you all deserve a mention, so here we go: Goalie : Tom Roberts. Defence: Ben Bradwell, Charlie Rayfield, Sam Knight, Bradlee Walton.
Midfield: Tom Farwell, Sam Bailey, Charlie Burden, Billy Ward, Charlie Rogers. Attack: Nick Menning, Aiden Compton, Jordan Pettengell
Scorers for Salisbury: Nick Menning, Aiden Compton 2, Billy Ward

18th Sept 2011 - Tyro Div One - Salisbury City 9 v 1 Colden Common Rangers
On this day of showers and sunshine, the newly promoted Colden Common Rangers held their own for the first 10 minutes of this fixture before some of Salisbury City's attacking play paid off. Billy Ward put in a corner that Bradlee Walton netted to make it 1-0, shortly after Billy got himself a goal before putting in another corner that led to Nick Mennings 1st of the game. Salisbury continued to see more of the ball and goals from Billy and Nick made the score 5-0 at halftime. In the 2nd half Colden Common started to compete a bit more and like the first half, they held their own for a while and got closer to the ball quicker. Salisbury City though were giving little away at the back and it wasn't long before Salisbury were scoring again, with Billy slipping the the ball through to Nick who took his chance well to grab a hatrick before Sam Bailey fed in Billy who also finished well to get his first ever hatrick for Salisbury City. Not to be left out, Sam Bailey got himself a couple of well taken goals, (one of them, blasted in from outside the box). Colden Common did get themselves a consolation goal and deservedly so, as they continued to play the game in the right spirit, long after the game was lost. Next up are Pace Pumas in an early season 6 pointer
Scorers for Salisbury : Bradlee Walton, Billy Ward 3, Nick Menning 3, Sam Bailey 2

11th Sept 2011 - Hants Cup 1st Round - Merley Cobham Sports 0 v 11 Salisbury City
Todays fixture was a repeat of last years Hants Cup 5th Round, in that it was away to Merley Cobham Sports. There was though, no repeat of last years fairly low scoring match (1-4 to Salisbury City) as our boys went on the offensive from beginning to end. It was clear our boys were up for this match as they put together some nice passing moves, with lots of effective link up play, from defence through to attack. In the first few minutes Merley Cobham did offer some resistance but after Nick Menning floated a cross to the far post for Billy Ward to head home, it was a case of how many goals Salisbury would score as we continued to attack. Bradlee Walton was next on the scoresheet, to be followed by 2 goals by Sam Bailey before Nick Menning also got on the scoresheet and Bradlee netted his second to make it 6-0 at half time. The second half started in a similar vein, with Billy scoring his second of the match before Bradlee got himself a well deserved hatrick. The last 3 goals of the game were debut goals for new boys Charlie Rogers and Aiden Compton who eventually got 2 goals, it was no more than he deserved after a lot of positive, unselfish link up play in the final third, throughout the match. All credit to Merley Cobham, they kept working till the final whistle but this was our boys day and in the end, the score could have been more but for the crossbar getting in the way a few times. Final score 0 - 11 to Salisbury City.
Scorers for Salisbury : Billy Ward 2, Bradlee Walton 3, Sam Bailey 2, Nick Menning, Aiden Compton 2, Charlie Rogers

Team work - It isn't important WHO scores the goals, or how many they score, what is important, is that, as a TEAM, we DO score goals .
Yes, it's goalscorers who usually grab the headlines or get mentioned in match reports but the most pleasing aspect of todays game was that it was a TEAM effort, with the goalkeeper and the defence remaining disciplined, the midfield working hard and the attackers showing a lot of movement and determination. Well done to ALL of the boys. You've been drawn against Winchester Youth Blue in the 2nd round of the Hants Cup.

04th Sept 2011 - Tyro Div One - Salisbury City 12 v 1 Sportstars
Good result today boys - 12 - 1, can't be bad. A positive start to the season! Whats more - last years worthy champions Pace Pumas lost to Hedge End Rangers 2-1 on their first outing and we go top of the pile on goal difference. A good days work as they say but it's very early days and as the manager just said in the guestbook, there is "room for improvement". What you can look forward to in the months ahead is a lot of hard work, both in training and in matches because, make no mistake, there will be a lot more difficult games to come.
Today though, as well as being the first game of the new season, it was also the first chance for the "new boys" to make their League debuts for Salisbury City Youth, with Aiden Compton and Sam Knight (crowning his debut with a goal), starting the game and Jordan Pettengell and Charlie Rogers making their debuts just before half time. Well done boys, hope you enjoyed it. Welcome to the SCFC Tyro Squad!

Below is a short report that we've sent in to the Salisbury Journal for this Thursdays issue - they may use it, they may not, we'll soon see

Tyro League Division One - Under 13's - Match Report - Salisbury City 12 - 1 Sportstars
Salisbury City Youth (Tyro under 13's) started their Tyro league Division One campaign against last seasons Division 2 champions, Sportstars, from the Portsmouth area. In the first half Salisbury played the ball around with a lot of tempo and deservedly went in front with a goal from Tom Farwell. The City boys who have enjoyed a good pre-season were hungry for goals and these were soon forthcoming. At half time the score was 7-0. In the second half the one way traffic continued and even though Sportstars never gave up (and even got themselves a consolation goal in the last few minutes), their resistance was overcome as Salisbury found the net 5 more times to go top of Tyro Division One on goal difference.
Scorers for Salisbury: Tom Farwell 3, Nick Menning 2, Charlie Rayfield, Ben Bradwell, Bradlee Walton, Billy Ward, Sam Bailey, Sam Knight

A MESSAGE FROM THE MANAGER TO PARENTS With pre season upon us, i will soon have the task of naming the boys for our SCFC Tyro Squad U13's, for the coming campaign. As a volunteer manager, coach and organiser, i will try to ensure that every boy contributes to each game in some way but please realise it is a challenge, balancing being competitive with players development and contribution. I will try to get the balance right as often as i can but it is not always possible to give every boy equal time in every match. If you would like to discuss any element of your boys development or contribution with me, then please come and talk with me on a face to face basis (after training or after matches, please, not during or before) or by phone. I am available to discuss these important matters with you as a parent/guardian but you need to understand that i have a squad of 13 - 15 boys to consider throughout a competitive season, whilst you as a parent may be focused on just one

OLD NEWS / LAST SEASONJune 20th 2011 - Congratulations to those boys from our squad that represented Salisbury Development at the South Newton and Wishford 24th Annual 6 A Side Tournament. Salisbury Development were a late entry to the Under 12 competition after Shipton Bellinger B pulled out. However, with very little notice or preparation Salisbury Development, won their group comfortably before going onto the knock out stages where they made it through to the final against Merley Cobham Sports who they beat on penalties to win the Under 12 competition and walk away with the trophies. Well done boys.

May 28th - Kieren's Farewell Paintball Event + Presentation. By all accounts, the boys really enjoyed themselves as did the few parents who also joined in. We hope they also enjoyed the End of Season Presentation bbq which at the last minute was changed from Terry's garden to the Barn
(a good decision by the way because earlier in the afternoon there was some rain and it wasn't the warmest of days we've had recently.) In the end though, the weather was kind to us and plenty of food and drink was to hand. The presentation itself saw the boys receiving their individual club trophies as well as their Tyro Div One runners up trophies. These were followed by individual trophies which went to: Spectators player - Charlie Rayfield / Club man - Kieren Edginton / Most Improved - Nick Menning / Players player - Ben Bradwell / Managers Player - Ben Bradwell.
Claire and Steve (our fitness coach) who are leaving to germany (taking our captain with them) were then presented with a farewell gift of appreciation for all their work and committment towards the team. All the best to you both.

Richie Cooper, our top goal scorer this season, was then wished all the best on his recent move to Portsmouth Academy. Good luck Richie.

It was then time for a special presentation to Kieren our long standing Captain who is moving to Germany with Claire and Steve. Kieren was presented with a framed signed team shirt as a farewell gift from all connected with our squad. Kieren has been captain of the team for 6 seasons!
Good luck and all the very best to you in the future Kieren.

Thanks to everyone for turning up and making the End of Season Presentation an enjoyable event and thanks to Terry Farwell for use of his farm

April 17th - Salisbury City 4 v 0 St Francis Rangers. After 2 matches where we had (unusually) failed to find the net, it was good to see our boys play more like we are used to seeing them play. On a warm day with the season winding down and this being our last game, our boys controlled the match from the off and over the 60 minutes our goalie had very little to do. Some nice patches of passing play and a determination to keep pressing forward saw us 2-0 up at half time, both goals being scored by Sam Dolan. The second half followed the same pattern as the first with our boys continueing to attack and this was rewarded with 2 more goals, this time by Sam Bailey. On another day the score could quite easily have been doubled (if we'd have put away some clear cut chances) but a 4-0 victory was a welcome finale to the season.
Scorers. Dolan 2, Bailey 2

April 10th - Winchester Youth A 0 V 0 Salisbury City. On a hot day in the sun, our boys tried but just couldn't get the ball in Winchester's net. Salisbury City created most of the half chances but Winchester came close themselves on a couple of occasions. When we did create ourselves a clear cut chance, Winchesters keeper pulled off a great save from a close range powerful strike from Richie to keep us from going in front. The thing is, Winchester's keeper on the day doesn't usually play in goal and was none other than Tom Lane who used to be part of our training squad. No hard feelings Tom, great save! 0-0 it ended. We found out prior to kick off that this was to be our long standing team Captain Kieren's last game for Salisbury City Tyro, as he's moving to Germany with his family. It's a pity we couldn't have sent him off with a win but none the less, ALL THE VERY BEST to Kieren for the future. NOT forgetting Claire and Steve (our fitness instructor). Best of wishes to them all.

April 03rd - Salisbury City 0 v 1 Pace Pumas (Pace get the 3 points they needed to win the league)
Some teams might be happy with a Tyro League Div One runners up medal but i don't think we are. After the season we had last year, when we won everything, to this season when we walk away with nothing, well, it's dissapointing, to say the least. Fair play to the Pace Pumas though, they came to the table this season with a determination to knock us off our perch (as the manager would say) and knock us off our perch they did. Yeah, maybe they did have a bit of luck on their side on occasion (as with the lottery of the penalty shoot outs) but we've come up against them 4 times this season and havn't beaten them once, whereas they can now say that they've beaten us fairly and squarely and won the league in doing so. The celebrations this season are theirs. We've got to hold our hands up and say we weren't quite good enough. After we won everything last season, they took the steps necessary to strengthen their squad, and it paid off for them. Our league season isn't over just yet but we've got to start looking towards next season and how we go about trying to win the title back. Hopefully we'll be up for the challenge.

March 29th - Hedge End Rangers 2 v 3 Salisbury city
A good result for our boys today. Hedge End are the best team at passing the ball around in our league (if you let them) and after running us close in our first encounter this season at Sherfield English and the fact this was their last game of the season, meant, we were looking at a potential upset. It was important our boys were up for this game and prepared to work hard to close Hedge End down quickly, disrupt their play and get the ball moving forward. They did this well from the off and even though Hedge End came close on a few occasions, in the first half our boys were in control and overall kept breaking up any Hedge End play and attacking them. We were eventually rewarded when Sam Bailey, who'd been lining up a few without success, got it right and struck a powerful shot into the net. 0-1 at half time. In the second half we continued to press forward and a nice bit of link up play down the left ended up with the ball being given to Richie who showed some good skill to control the ball, turn and bury the ball in the net from the edge of the area. It was looking fairly comfortable at this point but Hedge End kept trying and got a break away which led to a goal line scramble before the ball was put in the net. Even though a lot of our boys claimed our outstretched keeper had both hands on the ball when a Hedge End player scored, the ref wasn't having any of it and the goal stood. 1-2 and game on. Our boys could have panicked but they kept playing the ball forward and had a few chances to put the ball in Hedge Ends net before Alex Ferguson showed a lot of determination to get inside their penalty area and followed in on his intial attempt to put us 1-3 up. Game over we thought but Hedge End got themselves a free kick, directly in front of goal and just outside the area. Our boys set up a wall and had a player on the post, as well as the keeper on his line but none of them was going to stop the shot that followed and it was buried into our net accurately and powerfully. Final score 2-3 to us and a confidence boost for our boys. The Hedge End coaching staff ("the 3 amigos", as our manager calls them) were quick to congratulate us on our win. Hedge End Rangers A have been a welcome addition to Tyro Division One and have made this season a bit more interesting and competetive.
Scorers for Salisbury: Bailey, Cooper, Ferguson

We found out after the match that Pace had beaten City Central 12-0. This came as NO suprise to us after City Central failed to show up at ours last week ( ! ) and we knew Pace would cut into our goal difference big time as a result of this but what was a suprise was City Central turned up with only 9 players and finished the game with only 8

March 13th - Hants Cup semi final : Pace Pumas 2 v 2 Salisbury City.
(2-2 after extra time - Pumas go through to final after penalty shoot out).

For us, the season took a turn for the worse after going out of another competition at the hands of Pace Pumas, after yet another penalty shoot out. If the Pumas deserved to go through after our meeting in the Tyro Cup quarter final, then today it was us who deserved to go through (on effort alone) after a battling, committed come back after going behind 2-0 to a couple of early goals and it could have been worse but for a goal line clearance by Kieren, when a Pace player had rounded the keeper.
After the initial shock of going 2-0 down, our boys fought their way back into the game and in the second half it was all Salisbury who got back on level terms after goals by Nick and Billy but we just couldn't get a third and into extra time it went.
Once again, Salisbury had Pace on the back foot and it seemed only a matter of time before we got a winner but time wasn't on our side and with extra time stopping and starting due to injuries (which was to Pace's advantage, as it gave them a break from our attacks), Pace soaked up the pressure and kept us from scoring again and 2-2 it ended. Another penalty shoot out it was and the rest they say, is history. PACE PENALTIES: OXOOO SALISBURY PENALTIES: OOXOX
Afterwards our manager said, "no excuses, if we were good enough, we'd have gone through, end of, but we weren't good enough on the day". Pace Pumas have now won themselves a place in two cup finals and still have a chance of the League. Whereas, all we have to play for now, is the League. Going out of two competitions on penalties is a bitter pill to swallow but fair play to Pace, it shows that they made changes after our clean sweep last season, that gave their boys a better chance to compete against us this season. It's now up to our boys to show the same hunger, as they did today, in the handful of remaining matches and maybe we can finish the season with some silverware and as League champions again. Scorers for Salisbury: Menning, Ward

FEB 27th - With Pace playing in the Tyro cup semi final today, we thought we had a chance to go back to top of the league on goal difference (if we could beat Winchester). As it turns out, this would not have been the case anyway because Pace Pumas have been awarded a walk over / away win (3 points) for a match they should have played against Wyvern Saints on Jan 23rd.
They now sit 6 points clear of us, having played 2 games more. So, as it happens, after travelling all the way to Winchester only to have the match called off on arrival (!!!), we were not going back top in the league today (even if we had won). A wasted journey it was but some of us took a detour on the way back to watch the Pace v Hedge End semi final at Hunts Farm, which Pace won 1 - 0 in a match where some nice football was played, considering the pitch was a bit slippy and slidey.

With Pace Pumas, having strengthened this season and the promoted Hedge End Rangers adding to the competition with their neat passing football as well as Winchester being capable of causing an upset, on their day, this years league has been a bit more interesting and it looks like its going to go all the way before someone will be crowned this seasons Tyro Division One champions.

FEB 14th - Ours was the only Hants Cup Quarter Final match not played yesterday. Of the other quarter final matches played, the results were: Christchurch (BYFL) 5 v 2 Hedge End Rangers / Greenfields 0 v 5 Vics Youth / Pace Pumas 5 v 1 Hawley Boys.
It's now down to our boys to put on a good display against St Francis Rangers, on Sunday, and get us to the semis!

The semi final of the Hants Cup looks like this:

Pace Pumas v St Francis Rangers or Salisbury City Youth
Christchurch (BYFL) v Vics Youth

Games to be played Sunday 13th March

JAN 30th - Tyro Cup Quarter Final - Salisbury City 0 v 0 Pace Pumas
(0-0 After Extra Time : Pace Pumas go through 4-5 on penalties)
This is the first time we've had to report a defeat since we started 11 a side football last season but from some of our disjointed displays in 2010-2011 it was looking like it was going to happen sooner or later. Yeah, it's always said that penalties are not a "nice" way to go out of competitions but thats the way it is. When you win this way it's a great feeling but doubly hard when you go out this way. However, we have to hold our hands up and say, that on the football played during the actual match itself, Pace Pumas deserved this victory. The first half was a pretty even affair with both teams battling to make inroads into the match without creating too many chances but in the second half Pace Pumas came out of the blocks with what seemed like more hunger and desire than our boys and started to play the ball about a lot more than us but as in the first half, without creating that many chances. They effectively stopped our forwards from posing them any danger and were causing our boys more problems than we were causing them and if it wasn't for our defence (in particular Charlie Rayfield - who had a great match) getting in some last ditch tackles, things might have been different but it wasn't to be and at full time it was 0-0. After another 20 minutes of tit for tat extra time football, Penalties is what it came down to and as you know, someone has to go out in a penalty shoot out and today it was us.
Well done to Pace Pumas, as stated earlier, they closed down our forwards and showed a hunger and desire in this match, that our own boys are going to have to find again if we are going to hold onto the Tyro League Championship and The Hants Cup. Today it was their day, now our boys have to get back to winning ways and make sure that next time, it's ours. Come on you Whites!

JAN 24th - HANTS CUP 5TH ROUND. Merley Cobham Sports 0 v 4 Salisbury City.
Well done to the boys for getting through to the quarter finals of the Hants Cup. Not a lot to report on this 5th round match. Basically we got off to a great start by scoring in the first few minutes and even though Merley Cobham put up some spirited resistance and broke forward occasionally, it looked from early on that it was going to be Salisbury's day. On another day the scoreline could have been higher but it ended 0 - 4 to us and a place in the Hants Cup Quarter Finals. Thanks to Merley Cobham for the after match chips and sarnies.
Scorers: Menning, Cooper, Bailey 2

JAN 16th - HANTS CUP 4TH ROUND - SALISBURY CITY 5 V 1 CROFTON SAINTS
it's been a long time since there was anything to report but after weeks and weeks of games being called off, it was looking like todays 4th round cup match was also going to be called off because of the continuous rain. After going out on a recce and checking the pitch on Saturday we found, suprisingly, that the pitch was very playable, it was down to the manager to sweet talk the groundsman into letting the match go ahead. He was desperate to get a game under our belts after all the hard work the boys have been putting in at training. Anyway, the groundsman gave the go ahead if we could get volunteers to fill in any divets left from the match before, so, big thanks to all of you who arrived early and lent a hand in getting the pitch looking spic and span and playable. As for the match itself, little was known of the Crofton Saints, who play in the Portsmouth Youth League, so we didn't realy know what to expect. For a short while Crofton Saints put up some spirited resistance and after a few missed chances on our part, our boys went ahead when Sam Dolan sped into the box to put us 1-0 up. We conceded a well taken equaliser soon after. The midfield then came to the rescue after a typical long range left foot shot from Sam Bailey put us 2-1 in front. Sam B then played his part in our 3rd goal when he passed to Billy Ward who kept his cool to make it 3-1. Crofton Saints hopes of getting anything from this match had been short lived and in the end, it was a comfortable victory for our boys who never looked in any danger of losing this one, however, some periods of sloppy play throughout the match, prooved we had not played a competetive match since November 21st. That we were in control of the match was also evident in that our goalie Tom didn't have a save to make in the 2nd half. A headed goal by Tom Farwell and a late poachers goal by Nick Menning put the game beyond doubt.
So, final score 5 - 1 to the City boys and an away trip to Wimbourne next Sunday (weather permitting) to face Merley Cobham Scorers for Salisbury: Dolan, Bailey, Ward, Farwell, Menning
ps: Could whoever walked off with one of the orange bibs, please return it at the next training session and if anyone found a white and black nike ball size 4 (its got a tribal marking near the valve), could we have that back as well. Thanks.

NOV 30th - A few things to mention - you should by now be aware of a change to training this week. Due to the cold weather front we're experiencing, we wanted to be sure we would be training this week and thats why we decided to book the Five Rivers Leisure Centre. We tried for a Friday night booking but there were none, so we went for Saturday Lunch time. Hope you can all make it. It is important we train. If the bad weather continues we may need to do this again but a date for your diary is Thursday December 30th when we intend to book the leisure centre for a training session (not sure if its to be lunchtime or evening but we'll let you know nearer the time).

Winter Break - December 20th to December 30th . Our last training session before the Winter break will be on Friday 17th Dec.
Our last match before the break will be on Sunday 19th December (away to Winchester Youth A).
There will then be a short break from Monday 20th December until Thursday December 30th when we plan to return to training with a session indoors at the five rivers leisure centre, time to be confirmned.
On Sunday 02nd Jan 2011 - we have a New Year friendly / training match - kick off to be confirmned.
Friday January 07th - training to resume as normal (unless otherwise notified)
Sunday 09th Jan - Season begins again with the 5th round of the Hampshire Cup or a re-arranged match.
Lets hope its a bit warmer by then.

Fancy a night out? - we got an email from Pat (Dolan) saying that he, his wife and a few other squad parents were meeting at the Coach and Horses in Salisbury on Saturday Evening 04th December at 7.30pm. The plan is to have a few drinks and to maybe go for a curry later on. So, if you fancy a bit of socialising - feel free to join in - you are invited. Adults only.

NOV 15th - Here is the match report we sent for this weeks Salisbury Journal Youth Football section. When / if published they will most probably cut it / condense it down in size.

Hampshire FA Cup 3rd Round

United Services Portsmouth 2 v 4 Salisbury City Tyro League U12's.

Salisbury City won the Hampshire Fa Cup Trophy last year and had no intentions of letting go of it so soon in the competition and from the start Salisbury took the game to United Services and eventually a took a 1-0 lead from a typical long range strike from Sam Bailey. By then it could have been three or four more but for a mixture of some near misses and some determined goalkeeping by the United Services keeper. It was 1-0 at half time and the City boys seemed to have the game under control , when, a 7 minute period at the start of the second half saw USP get a foothold in the game and score twice to go 2-1 up. On a muddy pitch and with the opposition sensing an upset, a lot of teams would have let their heads drop but the Salisbury boys showed their fighting spirit (not for the first time this season) and regained control of the match, going close on a number of occasions before Billy Ward stuck in a well deserved equaliser from close range to ease the nerves of both Salisbury players and their supporters. The one way City traffic continued but so did the United Services keepers saves as he continued to keep the scores level before Nick Menning put City back in front with a well taken goal and then to finish United Services Portsmouth off, Alex Ferguson also got himself on the score sheet to put Salisbury City 4-2 up and into the 4th round of the Hampshire FA Cup.
Scorers for Salisbury: Bailey, Ward, Menning, Ferguson

OCT 10th - It has not been confirmned in writing yet but after Portsmouth United Youth pulled out of the Hants Cup 2nd round fixture with us (due to illness and injuries within their squad), the result should be either a bye or walkover to round 3 (same thing really). There is no satisfaction in getting a bye though. With the stop/start season we have faced so far, it would have been better to have played the fixture and given the boys a bit more match practice/fitness before the next 3 Tyro League fixtures in October where we play City Central away, Hedge End Rangers A at home and Pace Youth Pumas away. After these 3 matches we will be half way though our league fixtures and the coaches will have some indication of how the season is looking, where we are etc and where we need to strengthen and improve as we push on into the second half of the season, when there will also be Tyro Cup and Hampshire Cup fixtures to be played.
Lets hope the weather is kinder to us this season and we can get a decent run of games together.

OCT 03rd - Salisbury City 3 v 2 Winchester Youth A. The Winchester boys were certainly up for this game and from the start were quick to close our boys down and in possession they got the ball forward quickly causing our full backs some problems.
They were 0-1 up after 10 minutes and continued to be first to the ball on more occasions than they should have been. Their goalie pulled off a good save just after the quarter hour mark to deny us a possible equaliser. Towards the latter part of the first half our boys had Winchester on the back foot without causing them too many problems. In the second half Winchester got an early goal to make it 0-2 and at this point they must have been sensing a win was on the cards. Our boys were pressing forward without too much penetration until 15 minutes into the second half when Nick found the net to make it 1-2. Winchester Youth stuck to their task of making it difficult for us to create chances but apart from a couple of breakaways on their part that led to nothing it was our boys who kept the ball moving forward. The football might not have been pretty but our boys continued to press to get on level terms and when Richie was brought down in the area with 6 minutes to go, Bradlee stepped up to cooly put the penalty in the back of the net. Our boys then showed the determination that has seen them come from behind in the past and with 2 minutes to go our boys got a corner to which Sam Bailey was the first to react in the penalty area and headed the ball into the goal to give our boys a win that for long periods today didn't seem likely. Final score 3-2. Well done to Winchester for making a game of it. If our boys needed a wake up call, they got one today.
After our unbeaten run last season, we are the team all the others want to beat and a few of the teams (like Winchester) will have improved and strengthened since 09/10, so, if our boys want to retain their status as league champions they will need to improve their game as well as show the same hunger, desire and team spirit that saw them through that period towards the end of last season when they won 11 games in 22 days. You left it late today boys but have got to say, great comeback! Well done! SCORERS FOR SALISBURY : Nick Menning, Bradlee Walton, Sam Bailey

SEPT 26th - St Francis Rangers 0 v Salisbury City 6
Scorers: Ward, Thompson 2, Bailey 2, Ferguson

SEPT 12th - Our first away trip of the season saw us playing Wyvern Saints at the Lapstone Sports Ground in the Fair Oak area of Southampton. If the Wyvern Saints game plan was to stop us playing by packing out the midfield and defence then they did a good job. On the smallest pitch (with the smallest goals) we have played on since the mini soccer days, our boys found it hard throughout to get a lot of decent passing play together (we did manage , on a few occassions, to get some passing play together but it wasn't often enough) and the Wyvern defence stuck to their task of frustrating our attack play by working hard to close us down. 2 goals by Nick shortly before half time gave us a some reward for our constant forward play. Wyvern had a goal disallowed just before half time for offside but overall they troubled us little. The second half was similar to the first with most of the forward play being done by our boys but chances were not taken. Wyvern did get a few attacks of their own in but Kieren Edginton stood strong at the back with the rest of the defence and put in some good challenges. Well done has to go to Sam Muge for standing in as goalkeeper after an injury to Tom. He had lttle to do but what he did he did well.
The match finished 0 - 2 to our Salisbury City Youth and another 3 points in the bag to us but even though they lost, you got the impression that Wyvern were the happier of the 2 teams, having worked hard to keep us from scoring more, while we walked away knowing we can play a lot better than we did.
Scorer: Menning 2

SEPT 06th - Yesterday saw our boys run out comfortable winners with a 7-0 victory over Sholing who held firm for about 20 minutes until some good passing play up front saw 2 quick goals from Richie that put us well and truly in the driving seat. On the occasions Sholing did break through our midfield, our boys at the back dealt with them efficiently, getting the ball to our midfield and putting Sholing on the back foot again, 1 more goal in the first half and then 4 more in the second half (and it could have been more) saw 3 points from our first game of the season and top spot in the league due to goal difference. Well done boys.
Scorers: Cooper 4, Ward, Dolan, Walton
