EASTLEIGH YOUTH 1 V 6 SALISBURY CITY YOUTH

Match Report Rob Wade

SALISBURY City Under 11s continued their 100% winning record this season with a 6-1 away success over Eastleigh in the Tyro Cup.

The scoreline was hard on the hosts who had played their part in an entertaining contest.

With conditions difficult under foot, both sides did well to play some passing football in a well contested opening 15 minutes. As the half went on though the Whites began to take control with the running of Tom Farwell through the centre and Billy Ward on the right a constant threat to the home defence. Richie Cooper broke the deadlock with a well struck shot from the left side of the area and shortly after the lead was doubled as Bradlee Walton converted from the spot after a disputed handball in the area.

Salisbury took control in the second half and it was no surprise when they went 3-0 up as Alex Ferguson curled a shot over the Eastleigh keeper. However, the home side were not making it easy and they struck back as they caught Salisbury with a quick counter attack. William Wade tipped the shot onto the post and as defender Sam Muge prepared to clear it he was sent flying into the back of the net.

Salisbury, clearly unhappy at the controversial concession, hit back in fine style though and further goals from Bradlee Walton, Ben Bradwell and Sam Dolan sent them into the next round with a convincing 6-1 win

Hampshire County Cup SEMI FINAL

SUNDAY 14TH FEB 2010

UNITED SERVICES PORTSMOUTH 0 V 3 SALISBURY CITY YOUTH

Match Report Rob Wade

Salisbury City Under 11s swept into the Hampshire Cup Final with a confident display against a spirited United Services Portsmouth team.

The semi-final, played out at US Portsmouth's Whale Island home had a tight opening as two talented midfields battled for supremacy. The home side, despite a fair share of possession, failed to create any clear cut openings, whereas Salisbury were a constant threat with the pace of Sam Dolan and the trickery of Richie Cooper up front posing a constant threat.

Despite a lot of pressure and several corners, the Whites failed to hit the net until an opportunity fell to Sam Bailey, who lashed the ball home off the underside of the crossbar.

The hosts came out firing at the start of the second half but still failed to muster a shot on the visitors' goal. Salisbury, however, were always a threat and midway through the second half Sam Dolan doubled their lead when he latched onto a defensive error to crash the ball home from the edge of the box.

City's supreme fitness levels kept them going to the end and the only remaining question was whether they could add to the winning margin.

Five minutes from the end Tom Farwell's struck an unerring drive from outside the area into the corner of the goal to secure a clinical 3-0

win.

Hampshire County Cup QUARTER FINAL

SUNDAY 07TH FEB 2010

SALISBURY CITY YOUTH  4 V 0 MEON MILTON

Match Report Rob Wade

Salisbury City Under 11s cruised into the semi-finals of the prestigious Hampshire Cup following a 4-0 win over Meon Milton.

Against increasingly tough opposition, City were indebted to a fine team display culminating in terrific goals.

Sam Dolan opened the scoring when he burst through and chipped the goalie, before Sam Bailey headed home a Tom Farwell corner to end the first half with a comfortable 2-0 lead. The visitors were certainly competing in the middle of the park, but rarely fashioned any clear goal scoring opportunities against a watertight Whites' defence.

A superb third goal at the start of the second half wrapped the victory up as Sam Dolan and Ritchie Cooper passed their way through the Milton defence from their own half before Dolan notched his second goal. Cooper then put the icing on the cake in the final minute as he scored a free kick to make the final score 4-0.

128 teams started the Hampshire Cup competition and now Salisbury City are in the final four. Standing in their way will be United Services Portsmouth. The tricky away trip will take place on Sunday 14th February with a place in the Hampshire Cup Final at stake.

Hampshire County Cup 4th Round

SUNDAY 24th January 2010

SALISBURY CITY YOUTH  9 V 0 POMPEY PIRATES

Match Report Rob Wade

Salisbury City Under 11s finally got 2010 underway as they moved into the Hampshire Cup quarter-finals with a comprehensive 9-0 win over Pompey Pirates.

After having won their 3rd round tie after four postponements, it was somewhat of a relief to only have this 4th round tie called off three times!

Pompey Pirates arrived in confident mood and their pre-Xmas form suggested a tight game, but any fears the Salisbury contingent had were swiftly put to bed, as City's youngsters came racing out of the starting blocks. Billy Ward opened the scoring following good work from Alex Ferguson and then Sam Dolan doubled the lead, tapping home after Ferguson's shot was parried. The visitors then enjoyed their best period of the game but rarely made any headway through the well-drilled Salisbury back line. Billy Ward's speed inside the box earned City a penalty which Bradlee Walton coolly converted and then just before the break, Walton struck his second with a free-kick from just outside the area. The 4-0 half-time lead was no more than Salisbury's dominance deserved.

The second half brought no reprieve for the Pirates as Alex Ferguson latched on to a defensive error to make it a nap hand. Sam Bailey's clinical finish made it 6-0 before Billy Ward, Ritchie Cooper and a long-range Scott Horton effort wrapped up a 9-0 triumph.

The Whites will now be looking forward to some dry weather to reduce their fixture backlog.

Hampshire County Cup 3rd Round

SUNDAY 13th December 2009

SALISBURY CITY YOUTH  4 V 0 WOOLTON HILL ARGYLE

Match Report Rob Wade

Salisbury City Under 11s moved into the last 16 of the Hampshire Cup with a comfortable win over opponents Woolton Hill Argyle.

The 3rd round tie had been cancelled for four successive weeks but at the fifth time of asking, conditions just about prevailed at Salisbury's Sherfield English base, and the Whites secured a controlled 4-0 win.

After a bright start from both sides, City began to get on top. Billy Ward was causing much consternation for the visitors with his pace and trickery down the left flank and it was he who created City's opening goal, when he was tripped in the area. Bradlee Walton duly obliged from the penalty spot. Within two minutes, City were 2-0 up as a flowing move culminated in a clinical Alex Ferguson finish. The visitors continued to battle but it was all one way traffic and Sam Bailey added a third from the right hand side of the box just before half-time.

Into the second half and it was more of the same, as the hosts produced some flowing football without quite finding their killer touch in front of goal. Credit though has to be given to the visitors for their refusal to buckle and the keeper's heroics climaxed in a sharp penalty save. Woolton Hill only once managed to get sight of the Salisbury goal, but, despite outstripping the final defender, the centre forward could not get past the advancing William Wade.

Salisbury wrapped up the win with their fourth shortly before the end when Richie Cooper coolly slotted home in a crowded goalmouth.

The 4-0 win means that Salisbury City now head to Portsmouth for a last 16 encounter with Pompey Pirates next Sunday.

City Central Youth 0 V 5 SALISBURY CITY YOUTH

Match Report Rob Wade

After three weeks without a game, Salisbury City Under 11s returned to Tyro League action with their visit to Fleming Park,Eastleigh to take on City Central Youth.

The first half was a scrappy tight affair with the hosts displaying some nice neat passing but failing to test the Whites' defence or keeper. Despite being far from their best, Salisbury created chances and Sam Dolan latched on to one of these to fire high into the roof of the net for the only goal of the first half.

The Whites dominated the second half and stretched the opposition down left and right flanks. Alex Ferguson finished off a couple of flowing moves to make it 3-0 before Sam Bailey's long range effort left the City Central keeper helpless for 4-0. There was still time for a fifth and for Ferguson to seal his hat trick.

SUNDAY 04th October 2009

SALISBURY CITY YOUTH 10 V 1 SKY BLUES YOUTH

Match Report Rob Wade

Salisbury City under 11s moved to the top of the Tyro League after their demolition of Sky Blues.

In their first game at their new Sherfield English home, the Whites quickly asserted their authority. First goal came when the Salisbury attack shifted the ball beautifully across the area to open space up for Sam Dolan to slot home. They went 2-0 up when a Billy Ward corner was met by a firm Bradlee Walton header and minutes later Bradlee added the third when he floated a shot over the keeper. Before half-time the Whites added two more as a Ben Bradwell bullet made it 4-0 and then a bit of magic as Sam Bailey volleyed the goalkeeper’s goal kick back past him from fully 40 yards.

The Sky Blues team which had lost both their previous fixtures never rolled over and competed well in the middle of the park but they could not break through the City defence of Kieran Edginton, Charlie Rayfield, Sam Muge and keeper William Wade and similarly struggled to cope with the pace and power of Billy Ward, Sam Dolan and Richie Cooper up front.

The central midfield was ruled by Charlie Burden and he was he who added the sixth from the edge of the area. Sam Dolan added his second after great work from Billy Ward and then after Sky Blues had registered their first two corners of the game, Kieran Edginton lashed home an eighth. After Charlie Burden had hit the crossbar, Sam Bailey smashed home the ninth.

Sky Blues then got some consolation when a free kick was deflected in, but the scoring was not complete and Sam Dolan rounded the keeper to roll home his hat-trick and a 10-1 win.

The result was a kick in the teeth for the Sky Blues’ keeper who was heroic in his efforts, could not be faulted at all for any of the goals and made many last ditch saves

 Pace Youth 1 V 3 Salisbury City

Match Report Rob Wade

Salisbury City under 11s maintained their perfect record this season but they were given a fright and a battle by a determined Pace Youth.

Salisbury’s second Tyro League game saw them pitted against the same side they had put of the Tyro Cup 5-0 a week earlier and Pace were clearly desperate to set the record straight during an excellent first half display. Pace were first to the ball, stronger in the tackle and outplayed the Whites for long periods. With 20 minutes of the first half gone, Pace got the reward they deserved as they went 1-0 up thanks to a fine strike that gave Tom Roberts no chance.

The Whites looked a totally different side in the second half and began to exert more consistent pressure. As the half went on and with Salisbury taking total control of the midfield, the home side retreated deeper and deeper. With 15 minutes left the equaliser finally came as Ben Bradwell latched on to a fine cross from Richie Cooper to bury a superb first time half volley.

The goal did not affect the flow of the game as Salisbury launched wave after wave of attack. The second Salisbury goal came when Billy Ward floated in a dangerous freekick from the right and as the defence hesitated, Sam Dolan nipped through the crowd to nod Salisbury into the lead. The game was wrapped up when Riche Cooper coolly slotted home the third for a 3-1 win.

Tyro Challenge Cup 1st Round

SUNDAY 20th September 2009

 Pace Youth 0 V 5 Salisbury City

Match Report Rob Wade

Salisbury City under 11s endured their first real test of the season and came through it with flying colours as they knocked Pace Youth out of the Tyro Challenge Cup.

With three players out, the Whites were down to just 11 players available, including both keepers! Manager Chris Burden shuffled his pack for the visit to the only side to defeat his team last season.

The match had a tense opening as both sides passed the ball about nicely but without really creating chances. It was clear from early on though that the Whites’ defence would be busy for the first time this season. The early ebb and flow was typified when no sooner had Ben Bradwell struck the post at one end, than Kieren Edginton was making a superb last ditch sliding tackle at the other.

The breakthrough came when a Billy Ward corner was met with a Sam Bailey glancing header for 1-0. The midfield battle was red hot with both sides giving nothing and Charlie Burden, Ben Bradwell and Sam Bailey having to work overtime to break up the Pace passing game.

Towards the middle of the first half Salisbury began to exert their authority and after coming close with a couple of electric breaks, Richie Cooper added the second as he nodded home from close range.

After missing the chance to go further clear from the spot after Bradlee Walton’s run was ended unceremoniously by the keeper, Pace got back into the game. The central defence of Kieren Edginton and Charlie Rayfield worked hard to keep the lively centre forward out, whilst full backs Sam Muge and William Wade did well to reduce any threat out wide and help out in the middle.

The half-time team talk centred on starting the second half fast and that is certainly the way it turned out as Richie Cooper broke through and cutely curled one home from the left hand side. Shortly after and it was game over as Bradlee Walton battled his way through the defence and drew the keeper before squaring the ball for Cooper to complete this hat trick.

Pace to their credit did not give up and forced a good amount of pressure with Tom Roberts having to be lively and making a couple of decent saves.

The icing on the cake was provided in the last few minutes as Billy Ward provided a neat finish to Richie Cooper’s cross.

City face Pace Youth in the league next week, same time same place, and will have to be on their guard. Pace played well and are a good side but with the same level of commitment in defence and same clinical finishing the Whites will hope to march on.

SUNDAY 13th September 2009

Brading Youth Colts 0 v 15 Salisbury City Youth

Match Report by Rob Wade

Salisbury City Under 11s stormed into the 2nd Round of the Hampshire Cup after a stunning demolition of Isle of Wight side Brading.

It took only two minutes for City to register their first goal as Ben Bradwell latched onto a loose ball to crash home a superb volley. Under constant pressure from attack after attack, the Brading defence were indecisive and the keeper hesitant, as Richie Cooper with another 4 goals, Sam Bailey, Tom Farwell, and Billy Ward sent City in 8-0 up at half-time.

The Brading midfield battled hard but made little headway against Charlie Burden, the instigator of so many attacks. At the back Charlie Rayfield and Kieren Edginton were as dependable as ever, whilst keeper William Wade was largely a spectator. Full backs Sam Muge and Ben Bradwell spent as much time joining in the attacks as in defence.

The second half saw much of the same as the goals rained in. Billy Ward, Bradlee Walton, Sam Dolan, Tom Farwell twice and Alex Ferguson twice all added to the tally as the score finished 15-0. Credit to Brading for keeping going to the end and a much better last quarter display kept the score down!

Salisbury have a home draw in round two with Winchester Youth the visitors on 11th October.

SUNDAY 6th September 2009

Hythe & Dibden Youth Harriers 0 v 11 Salisbury City Youth

Match Report by Rob Wade

Hythe & Dibden was the venue for the Salisbury City Under 11s first Tyro league match and after a tour of the local area, the team arrived in plenty of time for a good warm-up. The weather was warm, the pitch was ok and the goals were not full size, a much better size giving the keepers at least some chance of making saves.

Despite the lads’ terrific pre-season form, manager Chris Burden admitted to some pre-match nerves, but he need not have worried as his side tore into the opposition from the first whistle and it was not long before the goals began to rain in.

First on the scoresheet was Richie Cooper as he continued his hot goalscoring form since joining the Whites with an angled shot from the left which found the bottom corner. Next up was Sam Bailey, as usual in the right place at the right time. Richie added number three with a bullet strike from the edge of the area, then Billy Ward got on the scoresheet finishing off a great run and cross by Alex Ferguson. Sam Bailey then added his second before Alex finally got reward for his darting runs down the right when he cut into the box and fired across the keeper into the net.

Half-time - 6-0 and jaffa cakes! It was a well earned rest for the lads and in particular for the Harriers’ keeper who had fought a lone and valiant battle against the City onslaught. In contrast, City keeper William Wade was asked if he would like a drink but replied he would prefer a chair, such was his inactivity during the match which saw the Harriers only reach the City penalty area three times – two clearances and one touch – no saves!

The second half began with more relentless attacking and at first it seemed as though the score would get out of control. The Harriers’ players looked weary and outfaced by the thought of another 30 minutes. However, they kept going and battled to the end.

The midfield was Charlie Burden and Sam Bailey’s domain and their tireless tackling and prompting brought wave after wave of attack. At the back Kieren Edginton and Charlie Rayfield ruled the roost with the Harriers finding no way through to goal. Down the flanks, Ben Bradwell and Sam Muge were solid in defence and terrific in attack, with constant runs down the flanks causing the Harriers’ defence no end of problems.

Up front Sam Dolan, Alex Ferguson and Billy Ward ran the Harriers’ back line ragged. Goals in the second half came from Richie Cooper twice more, Sam Bailey completing his hattrick with yet another header, Charlie Rayfield a rare but blistering strike from the edge of the area and Kieren Edginton joining his central defence partner on the scoresheet.

Tom Farwell, struggling with a slight strain, had a quick five minute run out and his first touch was the assist for Sam’s headed goal.

All in all, a more than satisfactory start - 11-0 can’t be sniffed at!
